HISTORY of Mansfield Tx

The first wave of settlers arrived in north central Texas in the 1840s and they were primarily of Scotch-Irish origins from southern states east of the Mississippi. These pioneer farmers entered an area where the Comanche Indians had been living for thousands of years. In 1849, the U.S. Army established Fort Worth to protect the farms in the area.

In 1856, R.S. Man and Julian Feild purchased 540 acres and built a 3-story grist mill at the crossroads that was to become the center of Mansfield. The mill, which produced flour and meal, was the first built in North Texas to utilize steam power. Feild opened a general merchandise store across the mill and he built a log house for his family, which also served as an inn. In 1860, the first post office was established in the city and Feild served as the postmaster.

During the Civil War, the Man and Feild mill supplied flour and meal to the Confederate Army. The small community around the mill prospered throughout the Civil War and the community took on the name of “Mansfeild”, a combination of the names of the founders. The city accepted “Mansfield” later on due to repeated misspellings over the years.

In 1890, Mansfield had 1,000 residents, four churches, two schools, two mills, a cotton gin, and numerous retail businesses. The town incorporated in 1909 and continued to be a hub for the surrounding farmland. The explosive growth of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex in the 1970s sparked Manfield’s transition from a rural town to a thriving suburban community. The 2014 estimated population of Mansfield is over 63,800. Mansfield is now one of the fastest growing cities in Texas.
